SHINE Strong
the first undergraduate training program for HIV prevention science and trans and nonbinary scholarship
SHINE Strong is a year-long training program for undergraduates interested in developing expertise in HIV prevention science and trans and nonbinary population health research.
SHINE Strong Scholars are paired with a mentor and will participate remotely in a 10-week summer intensive internship, connect with trans and nonbinary change agents, and complete a mentored research project.
During the summer intensive, SHINE Strong Scholars receive a monthly stipend to supplement costs related to housing, food, and travel to/from a two-week bootcamp, and commit their full-time effort toward achieving the goals of the training program.
During the 9-month academic year following the summer intensive, SHINE Strong Scholars recieve a monthly stipend to continue to work on their mentored research project deliverables, develop and apply to graduate programs, and participate in monthly programmatic events.
Scholarship
The Summer Intensive will provide SHINE Strong Scholars a foundation in HIV prevention science among trans and nonbinary communities, research methodologies, and social science theories and public health frameworks rooted in anti-oppression and health equity.
Community & Mentorship
SHINE Strong is a collaborative think tank experience that goes far beyond “learning” as a static individual process, but rather a dynamic journey with mentors, other SHINE Strong Scholars, community leaders and change agents, and the next generation of scientists.
Social Justice
Research is a social justice tool. SHINE Strong Scholars will ask salient questions relevant to the health and well-being of trans and nonbinary communities. Not only will they answer these questions, they will identify opportunities for increasing health equity and challenging oppression.
